The Mets Are Telling Me There’s a Chance

I am such a sucker.

Glad, I got that out of the way. Really though, I am such a big sucker. I don’t care who knows it.

All it took was one winning streak by the New York Mets. One MEASLY four-game winning streak (2 of which were against the Marlins, the 3rd worst team in the MLB) and I am back on my Glass-Half-Full shit. Not even sure why I do this to myself.

I guess you could call me “The Unicorn” of Met fans. I am one of the very few that would be considered positive. Yet, even as a positive Met fan, I am broken by this ball club at least 3-5 times a year. Without fail.

Mind you, the Mets are 44-51. They are currently 13 games behind the division-leading Braves in the NL East. So, you are probably asking yourself, “Why is this dummy getting his hopes up? This is the Mets we are talking about. Zero chance they are coming back with that bullpen.” You would be right in saying all of those things.

Having said that, I would urge you to simply take a PEAK at the rest of the National League. It is straight TRASH. The Mets have been an absolute dumpster fire for most of this season, and yet, they find themselves only 5 games out of the 2nd Wild Card spot.

Closer to the bottom than the top

Yes, I know they have to jump seven teams to get there. The math looks HORRIBLE. There are only 71 games left and the Mets would have to go 46-21 to get to 90 wins (48-19 to get to my preseason prediction of 92 wins LOL). They would need the seven teams ahead of them to all flame out in spectacular fashion to give them even the slightest chance at this.

Here comes the spin zone.

  1. The Mets got an important piece back to their much-maligned bullpen in Justin Wilson. That same bullpen that has single-handily put the Mets in the spot they are currently in. Wilson has pitched 4 times since returning from the IL and has only allowed one base-runner in 3.1 innings. Wilson was a key free agent acquisition and his presence lengthens the pen. The Mets also got back Luis Avilan, the closest thing the Mets have to a LOOGY (left-handed reliever that excels at getting lefty batters out). God forbid Familia and Diaz get their shit together, we might actually have something here. All I am asking for is an average pen!
  2. The Mets schedule lends itself to the Mets being able to make up a lot ground in a small amount of time. None of the teams they are playing before the deadline are above .500.

The Giants, Padres, Pirates and Nationals are all teams currently ahead of the Mets in the Wild Card chase (reference standings above please!). While it may not look like it right now, I truly feel that the Mets are the most talented team in this bunch (save for the Nats).

It is literally right there in front of them if they want it enough. Ultimately, it may be a “too little, too late” deal. The Mets absolutely need to turn it around quick, because they are going to need to be a seller come the end of this month if they aren’t going to give it a real run.

They should absolutely not be a “buyer” at the deadline, so this is the team they are riding with. Again, a ton of things have to go right. The offense (namely Robbie Cano) needs to produce. The starting pitching needs to pick their game up while also staying healthy. The bullpen needs to do a complete 180 and prove it can be at least average for all of this to happen. Mickey Callaway will need to suddenly learn how to manage a heckuva lot better.

I am not expecting any miracles, but some good, consistent beisbol would go a long way. Maybe they catch the breaks and make this thing interesting. All I know is, it sure beats the alternative of #prospectszn and calling it quits before August.

Let’s see if they got it in them. Most will be skeptical. I am holding out the faintest bit of hope. I am 51% back in. Who knows, maybe they will even get back the corpses that are Brandon Nimmo and Jed Lowrie. I know, crazy thoughts.
